IBC-Research with Hazardous Materials


All research conducted by Texas A&M University-Commerce employees or students, involving any of the agents/materials listed below, must be approved by the Texas A&M University-Commerce Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) prior to initiation of the research:

  • Pathogens and potential pathogens of humans, animals or plants;
  • Materials potentially containing human pathogens (including human blood, tissue, and cell lines; non-human primate blood, tissue, and cell lines);
  • Recombinant DNA (and RNA) including creation or use of transgenic plants and animals;
  • Select agents and toxins (see http://www.selectagents.gov) including strains and amounts exempted from the select agent regulations;
  • Any material requiring a Center for Disease Control import license or a United States Department of Agriculture permit.

Biosafety Required Training

All individuals involved in the biosafety research must first complete the required compliance training, Biosafety and Responsible Conduct in Research. This requirement is met by the successful completion of the online training module from the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website.

Select Texas A&M University-Commerce as your participating institution
Complete the remaining registration form
Select the Biosafety/Biosecurity Course in the Learner Groups:

  • Biosafety Complete Training Series Groups

You are also required to complete the Responsible Conduct of Research module.  Please select the appropriate module from the following:

  • Biomedical Responsible Conduct of Research Course
  • Social and Behavioral Responsible Conduct of Research Course
  • Physical Science Responsible Conduct of Research Course
  • Humanities Responsible Conduct of Research Course

Actual Course Titles are as listed above.

Biosafety Protocol Forms

To gain approval of your biosafety research you must complete and submit the appropriate biosafety protocol forms.

2018-2019 IBC Meeting Schedule

Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Place: Library ORSP Training Room 230

The public is welcome to attend all IBC meetings as listed in the schedule below.

All IBC permits or amendments will be reviewed at convened meetings of the IBC.

To ensure adequate time for review and consideration by the IBC, permits must be submitted by the appropriate deadline indicated below.  Prescreening by the IBC staff may identify permit revisions or training required by the investigator. These revisions could delay review, therefore please submit in time and plan accordingly.
