LaptopsAnytime™ Launch Party

James G. Gee Library at Texas A&M University-Commerce is hosting a LaptopsAnytime™ launch party November 13 at 2 pm. During the launch, a student will be joined by Lucky the Lion to be the first to check out a laptop from the kiosk.

“We are excited to be the first library in Texas to offer this innovative new service,” said Greg Mitchell, Director of Libraries. “We partnered with LaptopsAnytime™ to create a customized machine that dispenses the standard university laptops. It offers our students the convenience of computer technology any time of the day or night, with no rental charge.”

Students just have to bring their student ID card to swipe, and then they will be able to check out a laptop.

“The LaptopsAnytime™ kiosk will benefit the students by allowing them to check out a laptop for one day,” said Sean Anderson, Technology Librarian/Web Master. “These laptops are able to leave the library and can be used at their dorm, home, class or anywhere they choose. As with the computers in the Nexus, the laptops will wipe out all stored information when they are shutdown, thus keeping a student's work from being hijacked. We may have started small, but I envision big things coming from this.”

LaptopsAnytime™ was founded in 2008 with the purpose of giving back to the community through convenient, on-demand access to full-function laptops. In 2011, they won the Dell Mobility Challenge sponsored by Dell and Intel.

“Laptops are always extremely popular with our students,” said Chuck Brookshire, Nexus Specialist. “We now have a way to provide fast and convenient check-out of these essential items with a minimum of manual intervention. The ability to use these laptops for extended periods of time, both in and outside of the library, will be a great feature of this new service!”
