Jay Garrett graduated from East Texas State University and SMU Law School. He has been a partner at Faires & Garrett Attorney at Law since 1975. In the same year he began teaching as adjunct professor at Texas A&M University-Commerce teaching various classes and areas of law. In 2006 he took his present position as a professor in the College of Business in various courses on legal studies.

Mr. Garrett also serves as the attorney for the Office of Student Legal Services at A&M-Commerce and legal counsel to the Commerce Economic Development Corporation. Mr. Garrett is currently City Attorney for the Cities of Commerce, Cooper, Deport, Pecan Gap and has served as legal counsel for many other area cities. Mr. Garrett also serves as Legal Counsel and Director for several area banks and business entities.

Mr. Garrett has been a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Hunt Co. Bar Association, Northeast Texas Bar Association, United States Bar Association of the Eastern and Western Districts as well as the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, International Municipal Lawyers Association, College of the State Bar, the American Bar Association and the Academy of Legal Studies in Business. He is licensed to practice in the United States Tax Court, United States District Courts and Appellate Courts as well as all state courts in Texas.

Mr. Garrett has an active practice with extensive experience and study in the fields of real estate law, contracts and transactional law, creditor and debtor law, corporate law, employment law, agency law, banking and finance law, agriculture law, criminal law, constitutional and civil rights law, family law, tax law, probate law, estate planning and is a consultant and frequent speaker on such topics. He has authored a series of newspaper tax advice columns.

In connection with his duties as a professor Mr. Garrett has developed podcast of his lectures for his online courses. The Podcasts have been accepted by iTunes and are available on that venue.
