Our East Texas A&M Dietetic Internship is a 9-month supervised practice program that helps prepare you for careers as an entry-level Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, equipping you with the knowledge, skills and professional experience needed to work in various settings and with varied populations.

This internship provides 1200 hours of hands-on experience in competency-based clinical, community and food service rotations. Our program is designed for those who have completed a graduate degree or are nearing completion and are pursuing eligibility to sit for the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist exam.

How to become a Registered Dietitian

This program serves as one of the requirements for becoming a registered dietitian.

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with coursework approved by ACEND
  • Earn a graduate degree that is required for all RDs beginning January 1, 2024
  • Complete an ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship
  • Pass the national Registration Examination for Dietitians
  • Obtain state licensure if required by your state.

Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission, you must first meet the following criteria.

  • Applicants must have obtained a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) or Future Education Model (FEM) Verification Statement.

Admission Process

Applicants must have completed a graduate degree from:

  • A U.S.-accredited college or university OR
  • A foreign equivalent OR
  • Applicants may apply during the last semester of their graduate program.

In this case, students must provide proof of their current enrollment status and anticipated graduation date. Acceptable forms of proof include an official letter from the registrar, a letter from the department chair or program director, or an official transcript indicating coursework in progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Dietetic Internship Program is not combined with a graduate degree program. The Dietetic Internship provides 6 credit hours toward the master’s in Nutrition, Public Health, or other approved East Texas A&M Graduate Program.

Our program schedule follows the university's academic calendar for start and end dates, holidays, and breaks. Please note that some rotation sites will require interns to work during the breaks on the academic calendar.

Interns should plan to commit around 40 hours per week for rotation experiences. In addition, you'll spend extra time working on projects and assignments required by the program. Some rotations offer hybrid options, allowing you to complete certain hours remotely.

No, interns are responsible for securing their own housing.
