Academic Testing Center

Located in Journalism 113

We are a walk-in-only facility; first-come, first-served. Please leave yourself plenty of time in case we are experiencing a high-volume day. Picture ID is required! Read the Academic Testing Center’s rules and procedures.

Math Skills Center (Math Lab)

Located in Binnion Hall 328

The Math Lab is designed to supply free tutoring for students and is aimed at helping students at the remedial, freshman and sophomore levels. Tutoring for higher-level courses is available, dependent on each tutor’s ability. Please remember to sign in when you use the Math Lab.

Graduate Assistants

Graduate assistants play an integral role in the department by assisting faculty with teaching and research. You will earn a monthly stipend while increasing your depth-of-knowledge and gaining valuable work experience.

You may also qualify for in-state tuition rates and tuition remission for up to two classes.

The Department of Mathematics offers activities to enhance your academic preparation and challenge your skills, including:

  • Adventures in Mathematics activities are designed for area high schools to take part in competitions such as the North Texas Algebra Competition (NTAC) and other engaging events. Learn more.
  • The Math Question of the Week can be completed for prizes. Learn how to participate and see the question of the week.
  • Our Mathemartist competition promotes artistic creations using math tools. Prizes for best submissions and participation souvenirs are available for those who take part. Learn more about the Mathemartist competition.
  • Formerly known as the Calculus Bowl, Math Bowl is an annual mathematics competition hosted at the Mathematical Association of America’s Texas Section conference. The Math Club at A&M-Commerce has organized several first-, second-, and third-place Math Bowl teams in recent years. Read about our history of success at the Math Bowl competition. Our Research

Our mathematics faculty are excited to develop your knowledge and skills through research. Opportunities are available for both undergraduate and graduate students. We encourage you to discuss any research interests with your professors.

Faculty Grants and Publications


Faculty submitted six grant proposals to the National Science Foundation, Melanoma Foundation and Spencer Foundation with a total budget of $1.25 million. Faculty also implemented the following grants:

  1. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Noyce Grant, Preparing a Community of Outstanding STEM Teachers for Rural and Urban Northeast Texas. Dr. Rebecca Dibbs serves as a co-principal investigator.
  2. National Research Experience for Undergraduates funded by the Mathematical Association of America. Dr. Mehmet Celik is the principal investigator, and Dr. Pani Seneviratne the co-PI (A&M-Commerce Research Students Present at Mathematics Conference)
  3. Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). Dr. Minchul Kang is the PI.
  4. Funded by the Simons Foundation: Biharmonic Maps and Submanifolds. Dr. Yelin Ou is the PI.

Ongoing Research Projects

Mathematics Education

Mathematics education research is focused on contributing to the understanding of effective geometry and calculus instruction for pre-service secondary teachers, strengthening of secondary mathematics education majors, influencing the instruction of college geometry and calculus at the state and regional levels, the influence of formative assessment on building classroom community in mathematics, and the efficacy of integrating schema-based instruction (SBI) within a problem-based learning framework. The research on mathematics education implements high impact practices in classrooms, including use of mathematics history, supplemental instructions, problem-based and inquiry-based learning, flipped-classrooms, peer-led learning, and peer-tutoring.

Mathematics Advisory COUNCIL

The Mathematics Advisory Council at A&M-Commerce guides the Department of Mathematics toward producing capable and competitive graduates by meeting the educational needs, expectations and trends set by industries, businesses and communities served by the university.

The council also assists with strengthening the department’s learning, research and outreach programs, improving our facilities, expanding our base of support and serving our alumni.

Ana Martinez

The math department hosts an event every year during the spring semester called Adventure in Mathematics where many high schools from surrounding areas are able to learn about the university and participate in activities.

I believe that being a part of the campus community is all about promoting education and continuously sharing with others the knowledge we are privileged to have received. This event stands out for me the most because faculty members, staff, and students from different departments come together to serve as an inspiration for kids and to show that receiving a higher education is possible.

One person in particular who has gone above and beyond since day one is our department head, Dr. Wang. One semester before I transferred to A&M-Commerce, I came to tour the university and spoke to him about the math program. After that day, he kept in touch through email. He made sure I had all the important information about the program and financial support; his office door was always open for me to walk in and ask any questions; he took the time to ask me what was going on with my academics; he always asked me about my plan for the upcoming semester, and he made sure I was a step ahead in preparing for the future.

I truly feel blessed to be a part of such an amazing group of professionals who care for their students’ successes and make sure we are aware of our opportunities.

I am a first-generation college student and receiving a higher education was not easy, but it also was not impossible. I was and am still blessed to have influential teachers throughout my education who saw my potential and always pushed me to dream big and work hard for what I wanted.

I am grateful because, without my family’s support, I would not be here. They could not support me financially, but they were always there right next to me, encouraging me to keep moving forward.

Since high school, getting involved with organizations and staying active with my community opened many doors with people who shared their experiences and provided helpful information toward moving forward with my education.[…] knowing that some people out there also believe in me through scholarship support gives me strength to work hard every day to not let anyone down.

Linh Truong

As a chemistry major, learning math at a higher level has helped me tremendously both in my undergraduate classes and in my research work.

Math is not just about solving algebra problems and passing classes with a long list of complicated formulas. To me, math is truly about applying the understanding of those formulas to understand chemistry equations and concepts.

I had a chance to participate in SCUDEM, a mathematical modeling competition, in Spring 2018 in which my group mates and I studied a published biology research paper and came up with a logical differential equation to model a scenario about survival mechanisms of zebra fish when living in the same environment with their predators.

It was a challenge for all of us, but we managed to pull through it and achieve an Outstanding Award.

The competition has taught me how to derive equations from research work. During my summer biochemistry research at Houston Methodist Research Institute, I applied the knowledge I learned from mathematical modeling to analyze my research data and prove the relationship between endoplasmic reticulum size change and cholesterol level in a zebra fish model.

If I did not know math, I would not have been able to continue my research in biochemistry. I believe that math is extremely crucial for developing fields such as bioinformatics, computer science, business analytics and many others. As the saying goes, “I used to hate math, but then I realized the decimals have a point!”
