A&M-Commerce has prepared me for nursing in more ways than one. The nursing building is equipped with simulations and real-life scenarios that allow for practice and perfection of skills.

Checking her mom's heart rate was a part of her routine. From a young age, Candace Linn carried a stethoscope around her neck. She remembers assessing her “patients” and updating their records regularly. She was a nurse at heart and still is to this day. A graduate from Ford High School, Candace currently studies as a full-time student in the Nursing program at A&M-Commerce. Over the last few years, Candace watched the program expand from a cramped building to a world-class Nursing and Health Science Center. Her passion for nursing grows daily, and so does her desire to care for those in need.

A Conversation with Candace

What professor or person on campus has positively influenced you?

“Many outstanding educators taught me how to succeed academically. Professor Jennifer Ashcraft, MSN, RN has influenced me tremendously during my time in the nursing program. Whether in the clinical setting or the classroom, Professor Ashcraft always creates learning opportunities applicable to real-world scenarios. She expresses a true sense of understanding of each student and time after time goes the extra mile to ensure we are set up for success. She makes learning exciting and encourages me to work hard every day. I hope to one day be as successful as she is.”

How has A&M-Commerce prepared you for your desired career?

“A&M-Commerce has prepared me for nursing in more ways than one. The nursing building is equipped with simulations and real-life scenarios that allow for practice and perfection of skills. These skills are also transferred into the clinical setting, which begins during the first semester. Through the nursing program, I have developed a sense of confidence in myself in which I am able to transfer into my care of patients while pursuing my career.”

What advice would you give to an incoming student?

“I would advise each incoming student to embrace their true passion and work hard to accomplish and pursue their dreams. Every now and then you will experience some failures, I myself have experienced a few. But with every failure is a lesson and can be used as growth. While going through college don’t lose sight of what your goals and aspirations are. Continue to motivate yourself and surround yourself with people that will push you to be your best.”
