A Conversation with Dr. Sewell

What do you like most about your career?

“The thing I like most about my career is sharing my sales and marketing experience with my students. With over 25 years of teaching experience in the areas of marketing, management and economics, I have a broad knowledge of how each discipline works together. I also have over 40 years of sales and marketing experience to draw upon to apply what I am teaching in the classroom. I have continuously been in some form of sales and marketing since I was 15 years old and have also been teaching full-time for over 20 years at the college/university level during that time.”

Why did you choose your discipline?

“I have been in marketing and sales for over 40 years. When I was 15 years old I wanted to get a job to start saving money for a car so I started working in my family's sporting goods business. Since my father had started out working for his father as a small engine mechanic, that I where I started. At the end of the summer, our shop foreman came to me and asked how I liked working in the shop. I told him it was “ok” and he said “so you really didn't love it did you?” and I said “not really”. Then I asked him why he was asking. His response was “because you tore up about as much as you fixed back here…have you ever considered a career in sales?” The following week I moved to the front of the store and my father gave me a $30k budget and told me I would be in charge of the water ski and sporting goods department. From that point, I went to college and eventually was a real estate regional sales manager and a sales manager for my family's boat sales division and currently am currently a licensed real estate agent.”

What is an interesting fact that others may not know about you?

“I was a zombie in a low budget horror movie with my son. It was filmed in my hometown of Pittsburg, Texas and was actually sold in Wal-Mart and still shows up on the Chiller movie channel on TV.”
